Behind the Scenes: A Day in the Life of a Makeup Artist

From early mornings to last looks, the life of a makeup artist is a mix of artistry, precision, and a whole lot of coffee. While our finished work may look effortless, there’s so much that happens behind the scenes to make sure every client walks away looking and feeling their absolute best.

Come spend a day with us at Ivory & Stone Artistry - here’s what it really looks like.

6:00 AM – Kit Check & Coffee

The day starts early - especially for weddings. Before the first brushstroke, our kit is checked, cleaned, and stocked. Brushes are freshly sanitized, palettes are organized, and every product is double-checked so we have everything from skin prep to setting spray ready to go.

Pro insight: The right tools and clean organization are just as important as artistry. A calm start to the day sets the tone for every client interaction.

7:30 AM – First Client or Wedding Party

For weddings, we arrive on location - sometimes at a venue, sometimes at a hotel suite buzzing with bridesmaids, champagne, and excited energy.

We begin with skin prep, discussing the client’s vision, and then creating a customized look that works for their features, style, and the day’s setting.

10:00 AM – Precision & Pace

Timing is everything. Wedding mornings and special events run on tight schedules, so every makeup application is efficient yet never rushed. We balance artistry with pace to ensure everyone is ready for photos - and looking flawless.

1 PM – Final Touches

Before the client steps into the spotlight, we do a final check: powder where needed, lips perfected, and a spritz of setting spray to ensure long wear.

2:00 PM – Reset & Afternoon Clients

After morning events, we clean and reset our kit before heading to afternoon appointments - sometimes private lessons, photoshoots, or special-event makeup. Each requires a different approach and product selection.

5:00 PM – Wrap Up & Repack

At the end of the day, every brush is washed, surfaces are sanitized, and products are reorganized for the next event. It’s part of the job that clients don’t see, but it’s essential for keeping our standards high.

What Clients Don’t Always See

The prep work: Hours of cleaning, packing, scheduling, posting content and organizing before and after appointments.

The customization: Every face is different, so each look is tailored to the skin tone, texture, and event style.

The emotional connection: Makeup is about more than just appearance - it’s about helping someone feel confident, radiant, and ready for life’s biggest moments.

Final Thoughts

The day of a makeup artist is full of creativity, logistics, and people - and that’s exactly why we love it. Every client, every event, and every look is a chance to create something beautiful that lasts long after the makeup is removed.
